The Whistle on the Red Dirt Road
Every afternoon when the heat of the day began to soften into golden light, a familiar hum echoed down the narrow dirt roads bordering the forest. It was the gentle chug of Kunthea’s motorbike. But long before the bike came into view, the rustling in the canopy began.
For the young monkeys who lived along the tree line, that sound was the centerpiece of their day.
Most of them had rough beginnings. Some had been rescued after losing their families, while others were abandoned pets who had once known cages and ropes before Kunthea opened her sanctuary doors to them. Restoring their freedom took time, but giving them love was immediate. Every evening, Kunthea loaded her motorbike baskets with sweet bananas, ripe mangoes, and water, heading out to visit her widespread family.
As she slowed her motor near the tall dipterocarp trees, a soft whistle escaped her lips.
Instantly, the branches above bent low under a flurry of energetic movement. Down swung Milo, a quick-witted long-tailed macaque who had once been kept in a cramped backyard. Behind him was Chhouk, smaller and timid, who always hesitated until he heard Kunthea’s soothing voice calling his name.
“Come on, my little ones,” Kunthea called out with a warm smile, bringing the motorbike to a smooth halt.
Instead of just grabbing the treats and retreating back to the safety of the leaves, the monkeys did what had become their favorite ritual. Milo leaped onto the handlebars, perched proudly like a tiny ship’s captain. Two younger monkeys scrambled up Kunthea’s shoulders, gently tugging at her hair in affection, while Chhouk nestled comfortably on the padded seat right behind her, resting a small paw against her waist.
With her passengers comfortably settled and munching on fresh fruit, Kunthea slowly turned the throttle.
The motorbike rolled smoothly along the quiet rural path. The wind blew softly through the leaves, carrying the cool evening air. On the back of the bike, the little rescued monkeys looked out at the passing trees with calm, bright eyes. They were no longer lost, locked away, or forgotten.
For a few peaceful miles, as the sun dipped below the horizon, they rode together—a dedicated guardian and her untamed family, bound not by cages or leashes, but by trust, kindness, and the simple joy of a journey shared.
