The air was warm and still, heavy with the scent of wet earth and ripe fruit. In a safe, sunny patch of green, Jinx, a clever macaque mother, was not resting. This was a monumental day.

At her side, nestled against her chest, was her baby. He was tiny, no bigger than her hand, with oversized eyes and fur the color of soft, dark caramel. They called him Pip.

Pip was content. He was warm, he was full, and he was very attached to the safe embrace of his mother’s arm. But Jinx knew it was time for him to discover his own strength.

With a gentle, practiced motion, Jinx stood up on all fours. She didn’t let him go; she just shifted him slightly, so his tiny feet touched the rough, bark of the large branch they were on. Pip let out a soft, high-pitched scree of protest and clung tighter to her fur.

“C’mon, little one,” Jinx seemed to say, her eyes warm and encouraging. She took one deliberate step away from him. Then two. She was barely an arm’s length away, but to Pip, it might as well have been the entire jungle.

Pip wavered. His tiny back legs, spindly and unsure, started to wobble. He sank down, trying to hug the branch, his large eyes locked on Jinx. He reached out with one tiny, desperate hand.

Jinx didn’t scold him. She didn’t pick him up. Instead, she sat on her haunches, remaining perfectly still. She didn’t offer a hand, but she offered something more powerful: her presence and her absolute confidence in him.

Pip looked from his mother’s calm, waiting face, to the wide, branching world around them. The other young monkeys were playing a few branches away, their happy, chaotic chirps floating through the leaves. He wanted to be there. He wanted to be fast and nimble like them.

With a determined, soft huff, Pip pushed himself up. His legs were shaking, but this time, he didn’t grab onto Jinx. He focused on a bumpy knot in the bark just a few inches in front of him.

One. A tiny, black, webbed foot pressed against the bark. His whole body leaned precariously to the side.

Two. The other foot followed, just as shaky. He was standing! A wobbly, uncertain, but magnificent stance.

Jinx let out a quiet, rumbling sound of approval. It was the best sound Pip had ever heard.

He looked up at her, and the fear in his big eyes was replaced by a look of sheer determination. He picked up his first foot again, this time with a little more purpose. He was still swaying, his tail twitching wildly for balance, but he was moving.

Step… pause… wobble. Step… pause… find his balance.

Jinx didn’t make a sound, she didn’t want to break his concentration. She watched him, her hand just centimeters above his back, ready to catch him in a heartbeat, but never, ever showing him she was worried. Her stillness was her support.

For five, glorious, agonizing seconds, Pip walked. He covered almost a full two feet, all on his own. It was a clumsy, adorable dance of survival and growth.

And then, as he went for one last, ambitious step, his tiny foot slipped. He let out a surprised chirp as he tumbled forward.

But he didn’t even hit the branch. Instantly, Jinx’s strong, warm hand was around his middle, scooping him up before he could even register the fall. She pulled him close, her chin resting on the top of his head.

She didn’t make a scene. She just held him, letting his rapid little heartbeat settle against hers. She gave him a soft, loving lick on his ear. The message was clear: You did it. You are safe. I am so proud of you.

Pip settled into her arms, but this time, he wasn’t clinging in fear. His small chest puffed out, a spark of pride in his eyes. He looked down the branch at the small distance he had traveled. He knew he could do it.

Next time, he would go even further. Because he knew that no matter how many times he fell, his mother would be there to catch him, and to show him, time and time again, just how amazing he could be.

Watch full video here:

High above the jungle floor, nestled in the thick emerald canopy of a towering banyan tree, the world was quiet.
